Paul Lawrie secured his first tour title since 2012 as he eased to victory in the South African Sunshine circuit’s Dimension Data Pro-Am.

The 47-year-old, who was partnered by his youngest son Michael in the team event, closed with a five-under-par 67 for a 15-under 274 and won by a single shot.

Lawrie, whose last notable victory came in the 2012 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles during a rousing year in which he returned to the Ryder Cup fray, can now look forward to a place in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational later this season as a reward for his conquest in the Rainbow Nation.

“I’m obviously delighted,” said Lawrie after he finished ahead of American Justin Hicks (66), Englishman Chris Lloyd (70) and home hope Chris Swanepoel (70), the latter two having shared the overnight lead. “I’ve not won for four years, so it is great, especially to play with my son. We’ve had a great week and to go away with the trophy is fantastic. It was awesome for him to see me win.”

Lawrie, who has missed two of his first three cuts on the European Tour this season, added: “The win gives me a big boost. Tee-to-green this week, I’ve hardly put a foot wrong all week, and I’ve holed a few putts. I’m going to take a bit of a break now and spend a few weeks at home and come back out with that boost in my confidence.”
