With the summer of sport well underway, you might find yourself watching events we don't usually get to see on TV

376 Team GB athletes have travelled to Tokyo to compete in an immense array of sports at this year's Olympics.

We all remember Jessica Ennis taking gold in the Heptathlon on Super Saturday nine years ago, but what events did she dominate to make her Olympic Champion?

This time, British hope lies on the shoulders of Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who became heptathlon world champion in 2019 and breaking Ennis' British record in the process.

As she attempts to better this record and win gold, here's everything you need to know about the heptathlon and decathlon.

What events are in the heptathlon?

The heptathlon is made up of seven track and field events which take place over two days.

In major outdoor competitions, the heptathlon is contested by women, while men take on the decathlon.

At the Olympics, the events will take place in the following order:

  • 100m Hurdles (August 4, 9:35-9:51 GMT+9)
  • High Jump (August 4, 10:35 GMT+9)
  • Shot Put (August 4, 19:05 GMT+9)
  • 200m (August 4, 20:30-20:46 GMT+9)
  • Long Jump (August 5, 9:40 GMT+9)
  • Javelin (August 5, 12:30/13:40 GMT+9)
  • 800m (August 5, 21:30 GMT+9)

Events get different scores depending on time or distance, and the athlete with the highest accumulated score across all 7 events wins.

What events are in the decathlon?

The decathlon is made up of 10 track and field events, contested over two days.

At the Olympics, the events will take place in the following order:
