Team GB will be looking to finish high on the Olympic medal table at Tokyo 2020 after the games were postponed for a year due to Covid.

With the biggest contingent ever to go to an overseas game, Team GB is 376-athletes strong, giving the UK even more medal hope.

Competing on the world's biggest stage is no mean feat at the best of times, but with the recent surge of Covid in Tokyo, the host city is taking no risks and a state of emergency means spectators won't be allowed to enter stadiums.

Athletes will therefore be left to their own devices, without the support of the crowd to cheer them on.

Will this tarnish medal hopes, or will the struggles of the past year spur the athletes further?

Since 1996, GB's Olympic success has turned a corner.

Returning from Atlanta with only one gold medal and team members forced to sell their kit on the street for money, lottery funding has since changed Britain's sporting fortune.

London and Rio were GB's most successful Olympics, so with that in mind, here's everything you need to know about Team GB's medal tallies from 2016 and 2012...

What was Team GB's medal tally from London 2012?

In London 2012, Team GB won more medals than they ever had before, with 65 podium finishes.

This hugely surpassed the target of 48, with home advantage thought to have contributed to the success.

The tally included 29 golds, 17 silver and 19 bronze, putting the team third on the medal table.

A postbox was painted gold in the hometown of each gold medal winner, meaning in various locations around the UK there are 29 gold postboxes.

It was the cycling team which brought home the most medals, tallying 12 between them.

What was Team GB's medal tally from Rio 2016?

Team GB's London record was broken in 2016, when they achieved 67 medals, two more than at the home games four years earlier.

Not only was it another record, but made Team GB the only country in the modern Olympic era to increase its medal tally directly following a home games.

The target had again stood at 48, which the team exceeded by 19 putting them second on the medal table behind the USA.

27 golds meant the team was two down from London, however 23 silvers and 17 bronzes allowed for another record breaking games.

What is the target for Tokyo 2021?

UK Sport have not set a medal target for the Tokyo games.

In 2018, the body had proposed a target of 54-92 medals, however this has been revoked due to circumstances caused by the pandemic making it difficult to prepare sufficiently.
