Jessica Ennis-Hill has pulled out of this month’s Grand Prix meeting in Glasgow after an Achilles injury forced the Olympic heptathlon champion to skip the indoor season.

The 30-year-old, who stunned the sport by regaining her world title last summer a year after giving birth to her first child, had been due to race the 60m hurdles at the Emirates Arena on 20 February.

But with striking gold at Rio 2016 sitting at the top of her priority list, Ennis-Hill has opted to play it safe.

“Training over the winter has been great but in the last two weeks my right Achilles has been sore,” she revealed. “I am waiting on guidance from my medical team after having a scan, but with just two weeks to my first race my coach and I have made the decision to skip the indoors and keep the focus on Rio.

“My training schedule and the appropriate care is being developed now with the outdoor season as the focus. My priority has always been Rio and I don’t want to take any risks in the short-term.

“I am understandably frustrated but know this is the right approach. I am sorry not to be competing in Glasgow – it is such a great meet.”

Laura Muir will close her indoor season in today’s Scottish Universities Championships in Glasgow with Guy Learmonth – who won in Vienna last weekend – running in the 800m.
