I HAVE recently visited East Kilbride, Hamilton, Milngavie, Bearsden and in the last few weeks Dumbarton. In each case I found the streets clean, the gutters swept and the drains working. There was no litter to blight the towns. The council employed people to sweep and pick up any rubbish dropped by careless people.

I am Glasgow born and bred and I am ashamed of the terrible state of my city. The city councillors of all parties are a disgrace in that they seem content to allow Glasgow to be a rubbish dump.

Can I appeal to Glaswegians to demand their councillors open their eyes to the state they have allowed Glasgow to get into?

Under their control Glasgow has turned from the Dear Green Place to the Dirty Grimy Place.

You reported that the city fathers are about to spend another £115 million on Sauchiehall Street to add to the many millions previously spent just a few years ago (“Hotel plan to create hundreds more jobs at BHS site”, The Herald, February 21. Then they laid Caithness stone slabs and instead of having spare slabs in store to replace any broken or damaged during street repairs they filled the gaps with Tarmacadam, destroying the appearance of the whole street.

If in May this year the incompetent Labour rule is ended I hope the incoming administration prioritise some of the £115m to clean up all the neglected areas of Glasgow.
