A film by the Scottish director David Mackenzie is in the running for a clutch of Academy Awards.
In the short lists for this year's awards, known as the Oscars, Hell or High Water is in the best picture category.
The film, a western, has also produced a best actor nomination for Jeff Bridges and nominations for best screenplay and best editing.
Mackenzie's previous films include The Last Great Wilderness, Young Adam, Perfect Sense and Starred Up.
Meryl Streep has become the first star to be nominated for 20 Oscars as she received a best actress nod for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins.
Hollywood musical La La Land has tied with Titanic and All About Eve to become one of the most nominated films in the Academy's history, totalling 14 nods.
British stars Andrew Garfield, Naomie Harris and Dev Patel have been nominated for their work in Hacksaw Ridge, Moonlight and Lion respectively.
Streep is nominated in the best actress category for her role as a tone-deaf opera singer alongside Irish-Ethiopian star Ruth Negga for Loving, French star Isabelle Huppert for Elle, Natalie Portman for Jackie and Emma Stone for La La Land.
Garfield, who received a nod for his performance as a US Army medic in Mel Gibson's war drama, will go up against Ryan Gosling, who is nominated for La La Land and Casey Affleck, nominated for Manchester By The Sea.
They are joined by Denzel Washington, who is recommended for Fences and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic.
Slumdog Millionaire star Patel is in line for the best supporting actor gong for playing a young man separated from his family and using Google Earth to find his way home in Lion.
He is nominated alongside Mahershala Ali for Moonlight, Bridges for Hell Or High Water, Lucas Hedges for Manchester By The Sea and Michael Shannon for Nocturnal Animals.
Harris has landed her first Oscar nomination for her role as a drug addict in Moonlight.
She is nominated in the supporting actress category alongside Viola Davis, who has been recognised for her role in Fences, Michelle Williams for Manchester By The Sea, Nicole Kidman who is nominated for Lion and Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures.
La La Land has become the most nominated musical of all time, beating the 13 nods racked up by Mary Poppins.
It is one of nine films shortlisted for best picture, taking on Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell Or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight.
The film's writer and director, Damien Chazelle, is nominated for best director and best original screenplay.
In the directing category he will take on Gibson for Hacksaw Ridge, Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester By The Sea, Barry Jenkins for Moonlight and Denis Villeneuve for Arrival.
La La Land, which tells the story of an aspiring actress and a jazz musician who sing and dance their way around Los Angeles, is also nominated for best cinematography, best costume design, best film editing, best original score, best production design, best sound editing, best sound mixing and two of its songs, City Of Stars and Audition (The Fools Who Dream), received nods for best original song.
There was no recognition for Ken Loach's benefits drama I, Daniel Blake.
The Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel in Los Angeles on February 26.
