Soul superstar Candi Staton will provide the music for a giant roller disco... at the Riverside Museum.

Performing with Studio 54 legend Jellybean Benitez, the Riverside will host an adult roller disco by night and a family skate park during the day.

The Evening Times first told of Candi's Glasgow gig last week and now the official line-up for the month-long series of events has been announced.

The events will form part of the Festival of Wheels with roller skating, skateboarding, BMX biking and the Blue Light Festival during three weekends in September.

Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life, said: “It would be hard to imagine getting through the day without the wheel, so I think its great news Riverside has decided to celebrate it with a dedicated Festival of Wheels.

“Riverside is already renowned for delighting visitors with some of the world’s finest cars, bikes, ship models and trams and now we’re moving outside.

"Whether your passion is roller skating, skateboarding or bmx-ing or ,if like me you prefer to leave these to the younger generation, but enjoy finding out more about the incredible work our emergency services do, you’re sure to find something of interest this September.”

Last year’s Blue Light emergency services event attracted more than 20,000 people across one weekend.

This year, the museum has expanded the offer and introduced a new festival celebrating wheels of all descriptions.

Candi Staton and Jellybean Benitez will perform as part of two days of back-to-back soul, disco in partnership with the Electric Frog festival.

The second weekend will see Riverside and Clan Skates join forces to bring skate and BMX enthusiasts an array of lessons, pro-skater and bmx-biker demonstrations and the opportunity to show off their skills on a specially constructed ramp.

On September 17 and 18 representatives from all of Scotland’s Emergency Services will come together at Riverside Museum to be part of the second Blue Light Festival, the biggest display of its kind in Scotland.

With more than 60 different vehicles attending, visitors to this free family event can discover more about the work front-line services do.

The Summer Beach at Riverside will remain in place throughout all of the above events.

Little Amelie Berry, three, had the chance to sit on a Police Scotland bike and watch Clan Skates skateboarders, Unit 23 bmx-ers and rollerskaters from Frank PR perform some wheely good stunts outside the Riverside, in a taste of what’s to come this September.

This year’s Blue Light Festival will bring together Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, Water Rescue, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Heritage Trust, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Vintage Albion Black Maria, International Fire and Rescue, NHS Motorcycle Response Team, ScotsERVS Transport Team, Police Scotland Riverside Cycle Team and Mountain Rescue.

Also on show will be a selection of vintage vehicles from the Museum’s own collection.

The fire engine collection at Glasgow Museums is the second largest in Scotland and includes a 1928 Albion-Merryweather Pump Ladder, whose chasis was built in Albion Motors, Glasgow, a 1940 Dennis-Merryweather Turntable Ladder that was stationed at Govan fire station during WW2 and a Leyland Firemaster Pump Escape, which was previously stationed a stone’s throw from Riverside Museum in Partick Fire Station.
