SCOTLAND women’s head coach Shade Munro believes his side have the ability and confidence to kick on after their first Six Nations win for seven years on Friday night.
The Scots sensationally beat Wales 15-14 at Broadwood Stadium, with Sarah Law holding her nerve to kick the winning penalty with three minutes to go.
Lisa Thomson and Rhona Lloyd had both scored tries, with Law converting one.
The players were delighted in the rain at the end and no wonder, given the team’s last win in the tournament was against France in 2010, more than 30 matches ago.
Munro said: “It’s great when you get rewarded with a win. They’ve waited however many years, but they’ve worked really hard and are improving all the time.
“In the past, even against Ireland a few weeks ago, they managed to not win that game from good positions, so we’ve learned from that. It’s great when you see that.
“Even at 14-7 down at half-time, the players and coaches were all pretty single-minded in their determination to win the game. We managed to do that, which is great.
“The difference this time was hard work, belief in what we’re doing, a good game plan and team spirit.
“If you have all those things, you’re going to go places. I’m really pleased for them, really proud of them. They performed extremely well and they deserve their victory.”
Munro admitted the scenes in the dressing room after will live with him for a while.
“It was brilliant,” he said. “That’s as good a dressing room as I’ve been in. They’ve never sung; they didn’t even know that you sing after you win a game, but they were singing here and it’s great.
“There’s been a big investment in women’s rugby and it’s testament to the amount of work that’s been done that we’ve ultimately got this win. You just need to see the look on their faces – fantastic.
“You don’t play sport to just lose every game. You play and you coach to win. You can’t just turn up and accept defeat every time.
“At the end with the penalty, I thought, ‘Sarah will get this’. She missed a couple against Ireland but she’s a determined character and she’s been working hard on her kicking. I didn’t doubt her for a minute.”
