What is it?

An automated door lock that will allow access to your home without needing to insert a key. You operate the lock using the August smartphone app.

Good points?

Unlike all other automated locks, August have designed their Smart Lock to work with your existing deadbolt. The only alteration is replacing the current thumb turn latch on the inside of the door with the Smart Lock unit. Users of iOS smartphones can enjoy the convenience of simply approaching the door to unlock via Bluetooth which is great when your hands are full and can't get to a pocket to pull out a key or your smartphone. This also works in reverse which means that after leaving your home the lock will engage after 30 seconds.

Purchasing an August connect hub will allow you to open, close and check the status of the lock from anywhere with an internet connection. Useful if you are away from home and need to grant entry to a friend or neighbour. You can also set up access lists for friends and family so they can use their smartphones for access, meaning you don't need to get copious sets of keys cut.

There is no retailer for the August Smart Lock in the UK yet, but it can be ordered and shipped from the US via Amazon.com

Bad points?

Unless your door and lock are perfectly flush and aligned you might have trouble getting the smart lock to engage properly.

Best for ...

Those who regularly forget their keys.

Avoid if ...

You have more than one lock on your door as only the deadbolt with a Smart Lock unit will work using the app – which means still fumbling around with old fashioned keys.
