This fascinating series of images from our archive shows that contending with extreme winter weather in Scotland is nothing new.

Instead of the gale force winds, biblical rainfall, and once-in-a-lifetime flooding seen recently, these pictures taken in and around Glasgow between 1942 and 1960 show Christmas card-like country scenes, city streets piled deep with slush, and a corporation bus pressed into service as a makeshift snow plough.

Of particular interest is the sense of good old-fashioned pluck and resilience on display, as people cheerfully get on with the business of walking, driving, clearing pavements and having fun in the snow.
