Am I the only one desperate to be able to ditch the long johns and open a sauvignon on the patio, or perhaps I am the only one carrying the torch for thermal underwear these days?

Anyhow, there can be few nicer luxuries than a crisp sauvignon blanc with beads of condensation dribbling down the side of the glass - ready to pair with a crab salad when the sun finally comes out. It's that gorgeously refreshing mix of gooseberries, tropical fruits and acidity that makes the grape so moreish on hot days.

Sauvignon’s spiritual home is Sancerre and while it still makes some awesome whites, many find them a touch too stringent when compared to New World versions, and its New World rivals are getting better every year.

While Marlborough still tops my list, along with South Africa, the Sauvignons from Chile are a close second. In terms of fruit and value for money, they are leading their entire continent right now, with Errazuriz standing in front out by a long mile.
