MACFARLANE Packaging has announced plans to invest in a new distribution centre in its home city of Glasgow.

The centre, based in Baillieston, will house Macfarlane operations and the polythene and paper business of Edward McNeil, which it acquired in May. The Edward McNeil business, which Macfarlane bought for £1.8 million, will move from its current base in Linwood.

Macfarlane, which has purchased five businesses in an acquisition spree which began in 2014, said the Baillieston facility will complement its other distribution centre in Inverness.

Spanning 28,000 square feet (sq ft), within the 190,000 sq ft Bullet Express distribution and storage hub, the facility is located close to the motorway network.

The deal will also see Macfarlane provide Bullet Express with its protective packaging requirements, while Bullet’s logistics services will support Macfarlane’s distribution service.

David Machin, group regional director of Macfarlane, said: “Investing in this move underlines our commitment to growing our protective packaging distribution business in Scotland. Our new facility at Baillieston will accommodate our growth plans at a location that is well situated to more effectively service our customer base in Scotland.”

Bullet managing director David McCutcheon said: “We offer Macfarlane Packaging a warm welcome to our new site at Baillieston. Macfarlane was our first customer when we set up business in 1990 so having them on-site is particularly significant. I have enjoyed working with the Macfarlane team to make this deal come alive and we look forward to supporting them going forward.”
