Roots (BBC4, 9pm)

The 1976 series Roots, adapted from Alex Haley's book chronicling the saga of a young African slave sold in America and his descendants, was a ratings and critical smash and caused many US viewers to rethink their country's past. This remake may struggle to have the same impact, but it's still powerful viewing. In the first episode opens in Juffere, West Africa, where Kunta Kinte is kidnapped and sold to English slave traders, who transport shiploads of enslaved Africans to America. After an attempted rebellion on board the ship, Kunta is eventually brought to Maryland and purchased by tobacco baron John Waller.
