20th Century Women (15)

four stars

Dir: Mike Mills

With: Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig

Runtime: 118 minutes

WRITER-director Mike Mills draws on his own life to deliver a warm and spritely coming of age comedy drama that has not one, not two, but three women in central roles. Who managed to get that one past The Man? Annette Bening plays Dorothea, a single mother in southern California who had a son late in life and is bringing him up with the help of lodgers (Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup) and the girl next door (Elle Fanning). Lucas Jade Zumann is Jamie, the youngster who gets the benefit, mostly, of the women’s wisdom. Mills is nominated for a best original screenplay Oscar, and his funny, wise, and moving script is played to perfection by a cast out to show how messy but wonderful growing up can be.

The Lego Batman Movie (U)

three stars

Dir: Chris McKay

Voices: Will Arnett, Rosario Dawson

Runtime: 104 minutes

THE 2014 animated hit gets a follow-up, this time with a certain caped crusader front and centre. Will Arnett voices Batman (in tones that bring to mind a certain new American president), who opens the movie by once again saving Gotham. This is one city that will never tire of its hero. Or will it? Lacks the sheer originality and pace of the first film, and the jokes for adults/laughs for children ratio is rather skewed in favour of the grown-ups, but still a fun ride.
