The second half of the Wachowski sibling filmmaking duo has come out as transgender.

Lilly Wachowski, who was previously known as Andy Wachowski, is part of the directing duo with her sister Lana, who came out as transgender several years ago.

The pair are best known for writing and directing The Matrix trilogy, as well as the big screen adaptation of Cloud Atlas.

Lilly made the announcement in a statement to the Windy City Times, an LGBT newspaper in Chicago.

She said: “Being transgender is not easy. We live in a majority-enforced gender binary world. This means when you’re transgender you have to face the hard reality of living the rest of your life in a world that is openly hostile to you.”

She added; “I will continue to be an optimist adding my shoulder to the Sisyphean struggle of progress and in my very being, be an example of the potentiality of another world.”

Lilly said she feels lucky “having the support of my family and the means to afford doctors and therapists has given me the chance to actually survive this process”.

She added that those who do not have support often fall victim to the high rates of murder and suicide plaguing the trans community.
