Andy McGregor talks about his new show, Naughty Cat and Cheesy Moon.

  1. Tell us about your Fringe show

Naughty Cat and the Cheesy Moon is a new musical for children, based on a story written by children from a Primary School in Port Glasgow. It tells the story of a little cat who steals a rocket to go to the moon as she has heard it’s made of cheese. However she is soon chased down by the ultimate detective, Super-Plod and a epic space battle ensues! It’s fast-paced, silly, fun and very very funny!

  1. How does it feel to be playing the Fringe for the first time?

This will be my second show to go to the Fringe (Towards the Moon was my first, in 2012) but my first show for children in Edinburgh. Scotland has an amazing reputation for Children’s theatre and I am looking forward to contributing to the already brilliant roster of shows out there.

  1. Best live act seen at Fringe?

I’ve seen so many things that I loved. Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour at the Traverse last year however, takes the biscuit. Bursting with energy, a relatable story and a show unafraid to be Scottish.

  1. Best thing about the Fringe?

So many things going on, so many people.

  1. Worst thing about the Fringe?

So many things going on, so many people.

  1. If you were not a writer what would you be doing?

Teaching, for sure. I had a cross-roads moment where I was accepted into drama school and teaching school. I took the road to penury and never looked back!

  1. How do you combat pre-gig nerves?

Well my job as a director and writer is done before the show starts. So all I can do is sit and enjoy. And drink.

  1. Worst on stage experience?

I played in a rock’n’roll band for ten years. So I’ve had some pretty shocking onstage experiences. Worst was probably when I got the set list mixed up and claimed we had written the enxt song, and then the guitarist starting playing “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash. Next thing we knew the stage was invaded by some skin-head with multiple Clash tattoos. I did what anybody in that situation would do, I went down on one knee and asked him to marry me. I think the confusion diffused the situation somewhat.

  1. What do you love about Scotland?

How no matter where you are, you are never further than 100 meters from a Greggs.

  1. What do you like about Edinburgh?

I like how it’s like a slightly grotty Hogwarts.

  1. What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?

Be named Andrew Robert McGregor

  1. Favourite Scottish food/drink?

Pizza crunch. Although I somewhat regret having one every day for three years when I was in High School, but the Fry Fare chippy offered such a good deal that it would be a crime to say no.
