Mark Gatiss said the next series of Doctor Who will be Steven Moffat’s “long swansong” as he bows out of his role as showrunner after six years at the helm.

Mark, who has penned episodes as well as acted in the show, added it will probably be a “relief” when Steven hands over the reins to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall, who’ll take over as lead writer and executive producer for series 11 in 2018.

Speaking at the Dad’s Army premiere, Mark told the Press Association: “We’ve been here many times before, it’s like changing The Doctor. It’s going to be very exciting because Chris will have a whole new agenda and whole new style. I think he’s a wonderful choice.”

He continued: “Steve’s done an incredible job. Because he was shadowing Russell (T Davies) before, he’s been doing it for so long that in many ways it’ll be a relief, but the main thing is he’s had an incredible time and done an amazing job.

“He’s got an entire series still to do so for someone who’s leaving he’s got a long time, a long swansong.”

The news of Steven’s departure has sparked rumours that Peter Capaldi could also be departing the Tardis too after three years.

Jenna Coleman left in series nine episode Face The Raven, although she returned for the finale Hell Bent.

Mark and Steven will continue to work together though, as co-creators of Sherlock, which is expected to return in 2017.
